I saw my favourite stories come to life, the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding hood, Alice and the White Rabbit, I even saw some old friends. Dracula and his three brides, The Wolfman and Frankenstein and his Bride, they all seemed to forget what they should be doing.

Dracula didn’t even glance at the bare neck of a passerby; he was concentrating on his Candy collection. The big Bad wolf was Helping Little Red with her overly heavy bag of candy. The Wolfman never made a peep when all of these delicious little Goat shaped children passed by.

I just couldn’t believe it, what had happened; nothing was as it should be. No havoc, no bloodshed, everyone was smiling and happy as they walked around on a crisp Halloween night, forgetting the roles they play and just having fun.  As I watched them, something happened within my cold dead heart; I had no desire for havoc or bloodshed anymore. All I kept thinking about was talking with my friends, having a good time and boasting about all the candy we’ve gotten as we run around without a care in the world. Without knowing it, I found myself walking out my front door, bag in hand, ready to accept candy from strangers, wanting only the candy and nothing more from them.

I guess Halloween brings out the child in everyone, even someone as old as me. I can’t wait for next year.

With all the wars waging even today, this is the only time of the year where Angels and Demons, Cops and Criminals and every type of person who should normally fight against each other can come together and fight for one greater purpose: who will get the most candy and of course to egg the occasional house that decides to hand out a Healthy Alternative; like a Banana.

So keep this in mind, it will save you hours of scrapping dried egg and silly string off of your windows; the next time you’re about to grab a sack of apples instead of that delicious 50 pack of mini chocolate bars, remember that this is the one night of the year that you can help a Lion and a Goat come together to fight for the same thing: good candy, good fun and lots of memories that do not end in bloodshed, unless you decide to come to my Halloween party, but I promise it won’t hurt….much.

When the flesh-eating demons start their attack, the blood doesn’t just ooze; it splatters, gushes and flows by the bucketful. And there is the scene where one of the girls is beckoned into the woods only to be attacked and raped by a…tree?! Cheap special effects galore decorate this vacation to a little north of Hell. The comedy was unintentional. It is a product of bad acting by actors with little or no experience. But still, Raimi as writer and director has stumbled upon something here. The Evil Dead more than deserves its youth restricted rating.

1. Watch The Original Series. These are still aired on TV on some channels, though it would be best to watch them on DVD as to see them in order. Remember, the special effects are bad because it started as a low-budget show back in late 1966. There were three seasons of TOS (The Original Series). All three seasons can be found for free at the cbs website under “classic shows”.
2. Watch The Next Generation. Once again, watching them on DVD is best, so you can see them in order. There are 178 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
3. Watch the movies, Star Trek I-VI (1-6), Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis, and the newest Star Trek movie. Even if you do not agree with the new movie, it still bears the label of Star Trek, even if it is a non-canon story.
4. Read the books! They are still being published and there are hundreds to choose from. Maybe at first just focus on the books to accompany your favourite series. To consider yourself a true Trek fan and not a ‘dabbler’, you must have read some books.
5. Review your knowledge. Make sure you know the technology, as well as the ships. At least know how a warp core works.
6. Continue watching the spinoffs. Deep Space 9, Voyager, and Enterprise. Be sure to pay attention to technology, terms, creatures, and characters.
7. Look on eBay or similar sites for The Star Trek Encyclopedia. This contains detailed information on STV ,TOS, TNG, and DS9, as well as the movies. It is the Star Trek BIBLE. And if you’re going to be a fully fledged Trek fan you’re gonna need a reference book, for those times in the middle of the night when you absolutely NEED to go check what episode a certain ship was in, or what year Harry Kim was born.
8. Learn more about the Star Trek universe by reading Memory Alpha, a wiki dedicated to Star Trek. It has more info than the ecnyclopedia as it is constantly updated as new information is created. You’ll need it if you want your knowledge to extend further than Voyager’s fifth season.
9. GET A UNIFORM. This is a must. All real fans have uniforms. They are increasingly hard to find nowadays – you’ll need to try costume sites and eBay and be prepared to pay for shipping. (Do not fret – there is a new line of costumes soon to be realeased with the new movie in 2009)
10. WATCH IT. READ IT. LOVE IT.
11. LEARN TREKNO-BABBLE! Trekno-babble is the fast “techno-babble” conversation that people on Star Trek always have that only a true trekkie could understand. You will be expected not to get lost just because they talk about all this future stuff.
12. YOU MUST LEARN TREKKIE SLANG!! Trekno-babble, series abbreviations like STV,TOS and TNG, and stuff like that are musts. It would be so un-trek like of you to say, “I got lost in all that high future stuff talk.” Instead say, “The trekno-babble threw me off.”
13. Be smart and say long run on sentences like Data. Also, learn stardates. That way, if someone asks “when is the movie opening”, you can wierd ‘em out by telling ‘em the stardate. A good place to learn about a common version of stardates is freewebs.com/savethetrekkies.
14. YOU MUST GET INTO THE HABIT OF saying universe instead of world. Like instead of saying you’re the best mom in the world say you’re the best mom in the universe!

As for me, well I prefer something a little more rare, but will settle for some delicious Halloween Candy. Oh, how I dream about them, Tootsie Rolls prancing by, Smarties dancing by, M&Ms falling down like rain and mmmmm, the Sugar Babies I had when I was younger, I can taste them now.  I would have to say that I miss Candy Corn the most. It has been years since I’ve had a piece, the wonderful Halloween colors intermingled to create something so delicious. Halloween really is the best time of year, all the excitement, candy and costumes. Maybe I should dress up next year, I think as an Angel, it’s a nice escape from what I really am….. What do you think?

His second adventure took the character into a more horror-oriented story, skipping his legitimate teaching job and globe trotting, and taking place almost entirely in India. This time, Jones attempts to recover children and the Sankara Stones from the bloodthirsty Thuggee cult.

In his Third adventure and last for almost 19 years, he is shown teaching  at Barnett College, the globe trotting element of multiple locations, and the return of the infamous Nazi mystics, this time trying to find the Holy Grail. The film’s introduction, set in 1912, provided some back story to the character, specifically the origin of his fear of snakes, his use of a bullwhip, the scar on his chin, and his hat; the film’s epilogue also reveals that “Indiana” is not Jones’s first name, but a nickname he took from the family dog.

We were finally given his Fourth and long awaited adventure, set in 1957, it pits an older, wiser Indiana Jones against Soviet agents bent on harnessing the power of a crystal skull discovered in South America by his former colleague Harold Oxle. He is aided in his adventure by an old lover, Marion Ravenwood, and her son—a young greaser named Mutt Williams, later revealed to be his biological child Henry Jones III. It is also revealed that Jones was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (a predecessor department to the CIA) during World War II, attaining the rank of Colonel and running covert operations with MI6 agent George McHale on the “Reds”, which could mean the Soviet Union.

Fred “Freddy” came back to kill off the rest of the Springwood children in their dreams he is a disfigured dream stalker who uses a glove armed with razors to kill children and teenagers in their dreams, which ultimately results in their death in the real world. However, whenever he is dragged into the real world, he has normal human strength and vulnerability.

Being a long time fan of the Nightmare franchise I’m quite excited to see the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, it’s said to have gotten rid of Freddy‘s perverted and “funny” side making the film much more terrifying. Here is the official trailor of the remake.

Fans of the James Bond films will have a blast looking for all of the allusions to the old Bond films and trying to determine which Bond film is being spoofed at any given time, but it’s important to keep in mind that the film pokes fun at the Bond series in good taste. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is never disrespectful to the films that it makes fun of, which is probably the single most important thing about a spoof film that makes it good. This is why the Scary Movies, as just a couple of examples, were such dismal, hideous failures. They try to be funny by viciously making fun of all kinds of movies, and end up looking stupid because they have such a nonexistent right to do that. You can’t make a stupid, stupid movie and make fun of a lot of great movies (and some not so great, admittedly) and try to pretend to be respectable at the end of it all. That’s the recipe for a crapfest.

While it’s true that a lot of the comedy in the first Austin Powers film is slapstick and obviously contrived, I think it should be a testament to the quality of the film that it is still so funny! We see all of the traditional Bond clichés in this movie, such as the usual one-liners (which are made fun of extensively and with spectacular effect here), the fancy cars, the goofy cockiness, the teeth-grinding theme song, and the occasionally inexplicable popularity with the women (this allusion makes most sense when compared to those Bond films that starred Roger Moore).

The plot involves a rivalry between Dr. Evil, an evil mastermind bent on world domination, and Austin Powers, a mockish caricature of James Bond, bent on stopping Dr. Evil‘s world domination schemes. Meyers portrays both characters with hilarious skill, making Austin an awkward womanizer with some serious dental problems, and Dr. Evil an evil schemer with a hilarious cutesy side. Neither character really seems like they belong in the role that they serve (as a spy and a doctor of evil), which is where a lot of the comedy comes in. There is also, of course the fact that they both spend most of the movie 30 years in their future, completely out of touch with the new world that they live in.

Austin Powers is one of the most refreshing comedies to come along in years. It’s true that the movie is immensely immature and that it has unfortunately little re-watch value (one of the biggest problems with the film), but the quality of the comedy is unmistakable.

Following the publication of In Search of Dracula by Radu Florescu and Raymond McNally in 1972, the supposed connections between the historical Transylvanian-born Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia and Stoker’s fictional Dracula attracted popular attention.

Historically, the name “Dracula” is the given name of Vlad Tepes’ family, a name derived from a secret fraternal order of knights called the Order of the Dragon, founded by Sigismund of Luxembourg (king of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia, and Holy Roman Emperor) to uphold Christianity and defend the Empire against the Ottoman Turks. Vlad II Dracul, father of Vlad III, was admitted to the order around 1431 because of his bravery in fighting the Turks and was dubbed Dracul (dragon) thus his son became Dracula (son of the dragon). From 1431 onward, Vlad II wore the emblem of the order and later, as ruler of Wallachia, his coinage bore the dragon symbol.
