Fred Kreuger was a child murderer, and when a rookie cop became suspicious of Fred‘s activities he broke into the Krueger house and utterly trashed the place looking for him, stumbling across Freddy’s hidden trophy room where he kept scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings and such; afterward the cop rushed to the power plant where Fred worked, and brought him in. He was later released because of this cops mistakes and lack of following proceedure. As a result, the parents of Springwood tracked Fred down and burned him alive for revenge.

Fred “Freddy” came back to kill off the rest of the Springwood children in their dreams he is a disfigured dream stalker who uses a glove armed with razors to kill children and teenagers in their dreams, which ultimately results in their death in the real world. However, whenever he is dragged into the real world, he has normal human strength and vulnerability.

Being a long time fan of the Nightmare franchise I’m quite excited to see the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, it’s said to have gotten rid of Freddy‘s perverted and “funny” side making the film much more terrifying. Here is the official trailor of the remake.

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…

Three, four, better lock your door…

Five, six, grab your crucifix…

Seven, eight, gonna stay up late…

Nine, ten, never sleep again!

An amazing number of movies have been filmed over the years depicting the evil count, some of which are ranked among the greatest depictions of vampires on film. Dracula has over 170 film representations making him the most frequently portrayed character in horror films; also he has highest number of movie appearances overall.

Following the publication of In Search of Dracula by Radu Florescu and Raymond McNally in 1972, the supposed connections between the historical Transylvanian-born Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia and Stoker’s fictional Dracula attracted popular attention.

Historically, the name “Dracula” is the given name of Vlad Tepes’ family, a name derived from a secret fraternal order of knights called the Order of the Dragon, founded by Sigismund of Luxembourg (king of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia, and Holy Roman Emperor) to uphold Christianity and defend the Empire against the Ottoman Turks. Vlad II Dracul, father of Vlad III, was admitted to the order around 1431 because of his bravery in fighting the Turks and was dubbed Dracul (dragon) thus his son became Dracula (son of the dragon). From 1431 onward, Vlad II wore the emblem of the order and later, as ruler of Wallachia, his coinage bore the dragon symbol.

Dunbar Haunted House

Today marks the opening day of the Dunbar Haunted House in Vancouver, BC.

For those of you in Vancouver may I suggest you make a visit to the Dunbar Haunted House which is seriously decorated for Halloween. The Dunbar Haunted House is Vancouver’s best hauted house run by two artistic and veteran spookers. It’s for a good cause; collecting donations for the BC Firefighter’s Burn Fund, Vancouver Police Union Charitable Fund, and the Empty Stocking Fund. It is free, but donations are accepted (please donate). It’s definitely the ultimate haunted house display with live actors and amazing props.

The haunted house has been around for a couple of years and has been growing every year. The owner of the house just enjoys bringing entertainment to the neighbourhood. He is not that big of a horror fan but really likes the reactions that he gets when people come through. I think it’s fantastic that people do this for the public, and I wish there was more of it.

Start time: Friday, October 16, 2009 at 1:00pm
End Time: Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 12:00am
Location: 6478 Dunbar Street, Vancouver, BC

Vampires are notable one of the most popular villains of all time and one of the most popular Halloween costumes; Nosferatu, a 1930′s vampire film is of particular interest because of it’s history and the differences between it’s version of a vampire and the more mainstream vamp.

It was also a film nearly lost in time when the court ordered all existing prints of Nosferatu destroyed due to losing a law-suit against Stoker’s estate, but copies of the film had already been distributed around the world. These prints were then copied over the years, helping Nosferatu gain its current reputation as one of the greatest movie adaptations of the vampire legend.

Count Orlok is the main chracter in the film and is model for a style of fictional vampire not often seen. Although based upon Count Dracula, Orlok possesses none of his predecessor’s aristocratic charm or seductiveness. He resembles something between a rat and a spider and is much more analogous to historical folklore accounts of vampires.

He sleeps in soil infected with the Black Death, and brings plague and disease with him. He is followed everywhere by rats, traditional carriers of the feared Black Death. In terms of horror movie stereotypes, other vampires based upon this character are creatures bordering between a vampire and a mutant.

If you consider yourself a vampire fan, do watch Nosferatu, it’s worth your time and it’s a wonderful chance to see where our beloved vampires came from.

Maggie was working on another scarecrow. This one was extra special. It was for her garden. She made them for a living, a meager one, but it helped pay the bills. Farmers around these parts didn’t make a whole lot of money. It helped to cushion their winters. She pushed her golden hair back from her eyes and thought about what clothes to put on this scarecrow. Maybe a dress, yes, a dress would be nice. She went to her old clothes drawer and pulled out a flowered dress with a big sash to tie around the dolls tiny waist. Yes, this one was gonna be real special. She didn’t realize how special it was going to be.

It was all Hallow’s Eve, and George came home drunk again. Maggie learned in the past to stay out of the way but tonight she was so emmersed in her project that she wasn’t prepared for his homecoming. George was not a very patient man especially when it came to waiting for his dinner. He also was not happy that she had not prepared for the Halloween party that they were supposed to attend the next night. It was a big hog roast and bonfire at the Wilkins’ farm, and they were supposed to help with the decorations.

George was very unhappy with Maggie. He was really pissed off that she had not prepared his meal and had the nerve to be working on another one of her scarecrows when she should have been fixing his dinner. He had his ways and his ways were the right ways. He knew how to take care of this problem. She was going to be sorry. She was going to be real real sorry.

The next night as the guests all whooped and hollered around the bonfire and ate plates full of the tender roasted hog and other dishes, they all thought the roasted hog tasted especially good, and the scarecrow, with the flowered dress, looked especially realistic. Too bad that Maggie had to go spend the winter with her mother. Too bad they didn’t know she was never coming back. She wasn’t coming back here anyway.

What George wasn’t prepared for was the scarecrow waiting for him at home. This scarecrow looked exactly like the one that he had taken to the hog roast. Only this scarecrow was raising an axe. Funny how things work out. George never had to explain where Maggie was and why she never came back. Because George never lived to tell about it.

I was really in the mood for a good scary movie the other night, but I felt like I’d seen everything already, and I’d seen so many stinkers, especially of the remake or “reimagined” variety, that I wasn’t even going to bother with this one. But I was pretty desperate so I gave it a shot. When you go into something with few or no expectations, you can really be pleasantly surprised, as I was with this movie.

I’d seen the original “Last House on the Left” ages ago, was suitably freaked-out by it, and figured the remake would just be an even more gruesome, B-movie equivalent, and that the tragic events which befall the main actress would be even more exploitative. In other words, I thought they’d go for the same grossout shockfest that movies like the “Saw” and “Hostel” series’ had to stoop to, in lieu of actual suspense-building and dread.

Instead, this turned out to be a movie that could actually stand up on the acting, direction and cinematography alone, without excessive gore or silliness. Oh, there’s gore, but it’s handled quite realistically, and therefore is even more shocking than seeing gallons of blood gushing out everywhere.

It’s pretty suspenseful, too, especially, I would imagine, if you had never seen the original or knew the premise.

I don’t post a lot of these, usually only if a movie really surprises me in a good or bad way, and this one qualifies as a good surprise. This is a very decent scary movie if you’re in the mood for one.

Planning on having a Halloween themed night at your home full of scary movies and wicked treats? Most of these nights probably have a movie list comprising of Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the Thirteeth. How about refreshing that list and including something new, and something that is actually about Halloween.

Before anyone cries foul over my statement that TRICK ‘R TREAT is the single best Halloween-themed movie ever made, allow me to back up the statement. While 1978′s Halloween is a masterful, amazing thriller that truly has no equal in the horror genre, TRICK ‘R TREAT is something wonderfully different. It’s a movie that is Halloween.

Whereas Carpenter’s classic is set during the holiday and it plays heavily into the plot, the film could arguably be set on any other night and be just as frightening. TRICK ‘R TREAT hinges completely on All Hallow’s Eve, taking every spooky childhood memory its viewers have about the holiday and mashing them into a gleeful, creepy anthology of tales that are somehow both genuinely chilling and nostalgically beautiful.

Writer and director Michael Dougherty has crafted a film that transformed me into a five-year-old child in a Dracula cape and plastic fangs, riveted in stunned horror as his vision played out before me. Somehow, it succeeds in being both terrifying and charming.

TRICK ‘R TREAT‘s story unfolds unlike a traditional anthology picture, with all of the movie’s separate plots taking place together. We’re not subjected to title cards or stunted intermissions between tales, but a seamless mix of Halloween hijinx and horrors. In its five overlapping stories, a couple discovers what happens when they blow out a jack o’ lantern before midnight, a bullying child learns to check his candy before eating it, a young woman is stalked by a hooded stranger at a harvest festival, a group of pranksters uncover the ghoulish truth about a local urban legend, and an elderly Scrooge is visited by a pint-sized hellion who is far more interested in tricks than treats.

TRICK ‘R TREAT definitely deserves to be part of your Halloween movie night!
